Frequently Asked Questions
Inclusive or exclusive — which should I use?
Exclusive (the default) counts the number of full days that pass, the way you'd count nights of a stay: Monday to Wednesday is 2. Inclusive counts both endpoints, the way you'd count days of a trip or a rental period: Monday to Wednesday is 3. Contracts, deadlines and billing periods usually specify which; when in doubt, exclusive is the mathematical "how many days apart" answer.
How is the years/months/days figure different from just the total days?
The total-days number is exact and unambiguous. The years/months/days breakdown is calendar-aware: it counts whole years, then whole months, then whatever's left in days, the same way an age calculator works — which is why 30 days is sometimes "1 month" and sometimes "1 month, 2 days," depending on which month you're spanning.
Does this work for dates far in the past or future?
Yes. The underlying calendar math is correct for any proleptic Gregorian date, so century-spanning ranges (including the 1900/2000/2100 leap-year edge cases) come out right.
What if I want weekends and holidays excluded?
This page counts every calendar day. For working days only, use the business days calculator, which skips weekends and US federal holidays.
