Frequently Asked Questions
How do you find the day of the week for any date?
By counting the exact number of days from a known reference date (January 1, 1970 was a Thursday) and taking that count modulo 7. This works identically for dates centuries in the past or future — historical dates included, as far back as the proleptic Gregorian calendar is meaningful.
What day of the week was I born?
Enter your birth date and the result shows the weekday directly. The table below it also shows what weekday the same month and day fall on in nearby years, so you can see how it shifts (usually by one day a year, by two across a leap year).
Why does the weekday shift by different amounts each year?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so a fixed date moves forward one weekday most years. A leap year has an extra day, so any date after February 29 moves forward two weekdays instead of one that year.
Is this the Gregorian calendar or something else?
The (proleptic) Gregorian calendar throughout, including for dates before it was actually adopted in 1582 — useful for consistent date math, though it won't match a historical record that used the older Julian calendar at the time.
